i have decided that, as a small little monthly exercise, i will be doing a R.E.P.O.R.T. on all of the things i have been reading, eating, playing, obsessed with, recommending, and treating myself with during each month. as a bonus, i think i will also show you what i have been wearing, assuming i want to each month. i first saw this idea on tik tok, several months ago, but did not feel like i had a social media platform i wanted to participate in this trend on. now that i am trying to write more often and more substantially than create posts on instagram stories, i figure there is no better place to do this than substack.
june was the first full month of my sabbatical from work and i made so many lovely memories. i journeyed up to the town i got my bachelor’s degree in to visit my dear friends and attend a house show at The diy house for the last time (rip crayola), i cried over chappell roan’s success several times, flew down to florida and atlanta to visit my mom and another dear friend of mine, spent many hours reading and sweating and drinking cider until i was visibly bloated by my mom’s pool, and chain-smoked cigarettes in the atlanta heat. this month was truly the height of my brat summer…if you missed my short little essay on brat:
it’s a little late but let’s R.E.P.O.R.T. for june!
reading:
happy hour by marlowe granados - i bought this book impulsively the day of my flight to florida because i saw a tik tok saying it was “brat summer coded” and was delighted to find out that it Actually sooo was. this book was impossible to put down. the book follows isa and gala, two broke 21-year-old girls, in new york city in the summer via isa’s diary entries. i could feel the hot pavement under the girls’ feet as i read this book. it made me want to do impulsive, stupid, freeing things like pack up my life and move somewhere new, live off of cup noodles and the occassional free meal snagged from a tinder date, and spend every night at a new club, only getting drunk if a man in his 40s is willling to sponsor me for the night.
beautiful world, where are you by sally rooney - this was a reread for me and my favorite sally rooney book. i love how sally rooney develops her characters and the world they live in so beautifully, yet so succinctly. if you want to find out all of my thoughts on this book, listen to the newest episode of my podcast bookcels, questions for god, on spotify ;)
writers & lovers by lily king - another reread for me and a bit of a disappointment. i remember liking this book so much more the first time around and i’m sad that i tainted that for myself. i just didn’t feel compelled by the main character. i was actually quite annoyed by her in a way i don’t think was intentional. i was also underwhelmed by her relationships with her two love interests; i just didn’t feel the tension and the chemistry like i do in a sally rooney book.
big swiss by jen beagin - although i warmed up to this book quite slowly, about two thirds of the way in, i found that i couldn’t put it down. it was bizarre and funny and at times grotesquely embarrassing. this book follows greta, a transcriptionist for a local sex and relationship therapist, who becomes obsessed with “big swiss,” one of his clients, and the development of their relationship. i found greta incredibly likeable and relatable despite how i think she is definitely categorized as an “unlikeable female protagonist.”
eating: cowboy caviar and hint of lime chips, angry orchard ciders, bagels with chive cream cheese, strawberry cheesecake, penne with spicy vodka sauce, and catfish tacos from ponce city market in atlanta
playing: brat by charli xcx, sexy to someone by clairo, sweet lad by faye webster, dreamer - compound version by charli xcx, wide open spaces by the chicks, how to disappear by lana del rey, champagne coast by blood orange, and naked in manhattan by chappell roan
obsessed with: line dancing at the local gay bar, writing, the color red, being a lesbian, micro mini shorts, sweat marks on my clothes, the smell of sunscreen, the noise my grandmother’s charm bracelet makes when i talk with my hands, hanging out with my friends, spending money, cooling off in the pool, vintage miu miu, sex and the city, using cherry juice as blush, and posting on my ig story
recommending: doing things by yourself
treating: new clothes, trinkets, and do-dads, over-moisturizing after my showers, letting my voice be heard, buying vintage miu miu on depop
wearing: the 90s vintage miu miu (notice a pattern here?) cami top that i bought on depop for an undisclosed amount of money, biker boots, mid-wash denim, my signature daily jewelry, the scent zagara from santa maria novella, matching pj set from damson madder, camo hats
mwah!
what have you been consuming this summer????
LOVE
